Short Summary

  • Singapore's GST rate is 9%, in effect since 1 January 2024. No further increase has been announced.
  • To add GST: multiply the price by 1.09. To find the GST inside a total: multiply by 9 ÷ 109.
  • Older receipts use 8% (2023) or 7% (before 2023) — the calculator supports all three rates.

How Singapore GST Works

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is Singapore's consumption tax, charged on most goods and services sold locally as well as on imports. The rate rose in two steps — 7% to 8% in January 2023, then 8% to 9% in January 2024 — as announced in Budget 2022.

Whether you're checking a shopping receipt, quoting a client as a freelancer, or reviewing an invoice, the maths is the same. GST-registered businesses charge GST on their sales, reclaim the GST they paid on business purchases, and pay the difference to IRAS. Businesses must register once taxable turnover exceeds S$1 million in a 12-month period.

The Formulas Behind the Calculator

Adding GST to a GST-exclusive price:

Total = Price × 1.09 (GST amount = Price × 0.09)

Removing GST from a GST-inclusive amount, such as the total on your receipt:

GST inside = Total × 9 ÷ 109 (Price before GST = Total ÷ 1.09)

For example, a S$109 receipt total contains exactly S$9 of GST, leaving S$100 before GST. A common mistake is to take 9% of the total (S$9.81) — that overstates the GST, because the 9% was applied to the pre-GST price, not the total.

What GST Applies to

Most goods and services in Singapore are standard-rated at 9% — including imported goods and digital services bought from overseas providers. Two categories are treated differently: exports of goods and international services are zero-rated (0% GST), while the sale and lease of residential property, most financial services, and investment precious metals are exempt from GST entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Current GST Rate in Singapore?

9%. The rate increased from 8% to 9% on 1 January 2024, completing the two-step increase announced in Budget 2022. No further change has been announced.

How Do I Calculate 9% GST on a Price?

Multiply the price by 0.09 to get the GST amount, or by 1.09 to get the GST-inclusive total. S$100 before GST becomes S$109 after.

How Do I Work Out the GST Inside a Receipt Total?

Multiply the receipt total by 9 and divide by 109. A S$109 total contains exactly S$9 of GST, leaving S$100 before GST.

Why Does My Old Invoice Show 8% Or 7%?

GST was 7% until the end of 2022 and 8% throughout 2023. Documents issued before 1 January 2024 use those older rates — switch the rate selector in the calculator to match your document's date.

Is GST Charged on Everything?

Most local goods and services are standard-rated at 9%. Exports and international services are zero-rated (0%), while residential property, most financial services, and investment precious metals are exempt.
