For the latter part of her career, Christy Turlington Burns, the legendary supermodel of the ’90s has parlayed her poise and sophistication into philanthropy. Personally selected by Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, she was most recently made the cover of the September issue of British Vogue as one of the faces of change. Her charity, "Every Mother Counts", of which she launched in 2010, is dedicated to making childbirth safer for both mothers and newborns, in countries stretching from Uganda to Indonesia. Turlington Burns admitted to having an epiphany while filming the documentary "No Woman, No Cry" back in 2008.
"I had the 'aha' moment – had I lived in another part of the world, I most likely would not have made it. I began to wonder; how could I [make] an impact?" the 50-year-old recalls of the moment.
For MATCHESFASHION, Turlington Burns waxes lyrical on being exposed to the rhythms of the world, seeing the narratives behind them and preserving stories along the way.
