Marie Antoinette, notorious for her extravagant spending during her reign as the Queen of France in the late 18th century, has been a source of fascination to many over the years. The latest to draw inspiration from her decadent lifestyle is fashion world virtuoso Karl Lagerfeld, who seems to have designed Fendi’s spring summer and pre-fall 2017 collections with her signature style – romantic and excessive – in mind.

Accompanying the collections is a short film created around the concept of a modern-day Marie Antoinette, and featuring key pieces straight from the runway. Girl’s Secret was directed by Rebecca Zlotowski, the French talent behind films such as 2013’s award-winning Grand Central and 2016’s Planetarium, starring Natalie Portman and Lily-Rose Depp. Girl's Secret features up-and-coming French actress Sigrid Bouaziz (who appeared alongside Kristen Stewart in 2016’s Personal Shopper) as a 21st-century version of Marie Antoinette, lounging in the bath in her Rococo-style apartment and being waited on by unseen servants.

Embodying the rebellious and feminine aspects of Marie Antoinette’s character, the film follows Bouaziz and her team of It-Girl friends on their late-night escapades around Paris. They pout for selfies, conquer the bowling alley and hit the pool tables, all while dressed in head-to-toe in Fendi. Zlotowski’s film offers an intimate vision of the youthful and feminine collections with their kitschy accessories, whimsical florals, and Lolita-esque stripes.

The Fendi portrayal of Marie Antoinette is a free-spirited, self-possessed and indulgent young woman very much like the original – just that she parties to a soundtrack by Las Aves (a self-described “Art Pop / Future Wave” group from Paris).
